Climbing Treestands (Which One Should I Buy?)

Climbing Treestands (Which one should you purchase?)

While some hunters don’t have a preference regarding what type of deer stand they sit in I am a huge fan of climbing treestands and simply will not sit in any other type of treestand. With the evolution of the climbing treestand I have literally been spoiled rotten. The climbing treestand not only offers the versatility for today’s whitetail deer hunter to move about the woods in search of a trophy buck virtually anywhere, and also offers the most comfortable means for sitting. Some climbing treestands I have sat in are literally more comfortable than a nice piece of recliner furniture. In fact I own over a dozen climbing treestands that I utilize. Not all the climbing treestands I own are the same brand. I have experimented and own everything from Ole Man, Millenium Treestands, API Treestands, North Starr Treestands, Summit Treestands, and several others. I have field tested so many as a pro staffer and utilized so many different brands of climbing treestands over my hunt career I thought it would be a good subject to cover. The question is simple, which Climbing Treestand should you purchase and why.

Before diving any deeper into this subject I want the reader to know I have not been contacted nor swayed by any treestand company to write this article thus you are about to read an un bias opinion on what climbing treestand fits your needs as a whitetail deer hunter. I will set forth mere opinions in this article. My opinion is what it is, however I am not trying to urge you to purchase one brand nor another, but rather report what my findings and opinions are. Prior to this I think it important to set forth my credentials for the reader so that you know I have experience in this arena.

I own IMB Outfitters, which may be the most successfully and is argumentedly the best whitetail outfitting service which has been in existence for 13 years. I have arrowed 15 Pope and Young Whitetail Bucks. I am on 36 hunt pro staffs within the hunt industry. I have had articles published in most any whitetail specialty magazine available to the general public. I have also ghost written a couple books for hunt celebrities. I have hunted for whitetail deer since 1982 and since 1993 have hunted on more than 900 outings in the timber for trophy whitetail deer. During this time period I have become a huge fan of climbing treestands and will only use a climbing treestand in the woods due to its comfort and versatility to access any area for whitetail deer. Of the 15 Pope and Young deer on my wall I have taken 12 of them from climbing treestands, as well as missed probably three times that many. Literally if I had arrowed every buck I have shot at that would make the record books I might have more than any hunter in America. My problem is and always has been, “buck fever”. While I’m great at setting up on trophy whitetails I miss the shot a lot. I guess its been the one thing that has haunted me throughout my hunt career and probably kept me from being a mainstream household hunt name in the industry. Oh well, I can’t help it. Someday I will master buck fever, but today isn’t the day.

As a whitetail hunter you either bow hunt, gun hunt, or both. Obviously bowhunters don’t want to purchase a climbing treestand that has a rail around them preventing them from shooting at whitetail deer. Most major climbing treestand manufacturers offer an archery climbing treestand. If you’re a gun hunter only then you need a climbing treestand that has a shooting rail or a rail around you to rest your gun on. (Crossbow hunters as well.) Could be you can’t afford but one climbing treestand. If this is the case I would purchase one that converts for archers and gunhunters. If you can afford multiple climbers and bowhunt as well as gun hunt then I would urge you to buy a rifle climbing stand with shooting rail as well as a archery climbing treestand that allows you to draw your bow from it easily. As a consumer I would also always want to sit in the climber prior to purchase to make sure its what you want. I bought a climber once before sitting in it and learned a valuable lesson. Climbing treestands range in price but this is one product you don’t want to buy the cheapest one of. Pay the extra few bucks and get the best one as you will use it for years. Also remember that the most expensive climbing treestand isn’t always the best one, nor the one that meets your needs as a hunter the best.

Millenium Treestands

Hunting Solutions, makers of Millenium Treestands might not have a large of ad campaign as some of the larger manufacturers however the comfort of Millenium Treestands is satisfactory, however this climber is very difficult to use and quite lout. I will say its very comfortable. To be honest I wasn't fond of it. Their hang on is quite comfortable however we experienced some safety concerns with the lockon treestands. Gorilla Treestands

Gorilla Treestands is a company which I honestly have not used thus my knowledge of the company’s quality is somewhat limited. It would be unfair of me to say anything regarding Gorilla Treestands other than providing the specs on the products they offer. While the climbing treestands may be something I haven’t used we have used the lock on treestands with my only complaint being a clothe material seat that I have watched our squirrels literally eat through on an annual basis. This problem may be a localized issue or may be a problem that Gorilla Treestands has resolved.

API Outdoors Climbing Treestands

API has been a reliable means for providing quality treestands for many years. This company produces one of the best climbers in the world that I simply cannot complain about at all. The founder of the company, Paul Meeks, is a very nice decent Christian man who is respectable and a role model to any person. I have used API products and they hug the tree wonderfully. It’s also a company that has been in the business long enough to have refined product to the fullest extent.

Lone Wolf Treestands

The Lone Wolf Climbing Treestands are some of the most comfortable and quietest climbing treestands in the industry. I have heard from a few hunters that they wished the seat was larger, however I have never personally used one. Perhaps the treestand these hunters speak of is a model of lessor price. This is a company that popped out of nowhere several years ago and seems to have done real well. The product itself looks unique and is of genius design. Here are some products Lone Wolf Treestands offers in the form of climbing treestands.

Tree Lounge

Tree Lounge is a company I have never personally used simply because they just look too big to carry around but I hear no other climbing treestand can match its comfort. Thus this treestand is an all day type climber but can be somewhat noisy and bulky in my opinion. It also seems to be pretty pricey.

Summit Treestands

Summit Treestands is a company that in my opinion specializes in Climbing Treestands and provides a vast array of climbing treestands to the whitetail enthusiast. Whatever you want this company provides. The Summit Treestand probably holds tighter to the tree than any other climbing treestand on the market. They are also very comfortable, however I’m not quite sure if I like how the feet positioning is designed for climbing. My Summit seems to take away some power or leverage during climbing, however that’s just a personal opinion. There is no doubt this company is superb and superior to many other companies that produce climbing treestands.

Summit Viper

When Summit took their top-of-the-line Viper™ treestand and turned it into the "Ultimate" stand, they went above and beyond ordinary upgrades to create a treestand so full of features it's in a class all its own. First, they added a fully adjustable gunrest to keep your gun at the ready, so you'll never miss that one-in-a-lifetime shot. Then, they added a thick camouflage-covered platform comfort mat to relieve fatigue in your feet and keep you hunting for hours. You'll also stay concealed from big game in the custom drop-down camo blind that's easy to deploy from the front guard bar and rolls up to store. To really separate itself from the competition, the Ultimate Viper sports a Next Camo® G-1™ surround seat that provides extra support, even on the sides, with storage pouches to insert heat packs, accessories or snacks for a worry-free hunt. Also included is the Summit Skin, a tough sound dampening laminate and an automotive-grade adhesive for serious silence. All these amazing features will give you the advantage you need to succeed. Summitt 180 Max Climber

Sometimes bigger is better. If you're tall or wide, or both, then you'll want to hunt from Summit's new 180° Max™ SS treestand. Summit added a full 2" to the top section width and kept the 180° top-section length to give you Summit's tallest and widest treestand experience. Comes standard with RapidClimb™ stirrups, so bending over to attach boot straps is a thing of the past. You decide which way to face and shoot with the new ultra comfortable surround seat, which can be removed or set facing the tree for those often-missed, behind-the-shoulder shots. Rated for up to 350 lbs. and specifically designed with big hunters in mind. Seat has super-comfortable solid-core backrest. Thick, comfortable pads in armrest and top section bar. 8,000-lb. cable secures you for success. Stand is tested to TMA standards and includes a full-body harness tested to TMA standards.

The aforementioned companies are without doubt the industry leaders and any purchase of any of them would be wise. If you haven’t tried using a climbing treestand it’s a tool any whitetail hunter needs to master. It will afford you the opportunity to bounce around the woods wherever you please in search of your next trophy whitetail buck, all the while hunting from the most comfortable means possible. Nothing is more comfortable in the woods than sitting in a climbing treestand, however take my advice and make your purchase of an Ol Man Treestand. They are worth every dollar and second to none.
