Whitetail Deer Hunts in the Midwest

Whitetail Deer Hunts in the Midwest

Deer hunts in the Midwest are nothing short of phenomenal, as long as you research the correct location to hunt, as well as select the right whitetail deer outfitter in the Midwest to hunt with. Deer hunting in the Midwest is currently, and may always be your best opportunity for a chance to harvest the whitetail buck of a lifetime. In the following article I intend to provide factual data along with statistics from the National Whitetail Record Books in an effort to prove that deer hunting in the Midwest is superior to all other areas on the North America Continent.

Canada versus the Midwest Deer Hunting Pope and Young Statistics

Thatís right, Iím telling you facts tell us from the Pope and Young Record Book as well as the Boone and Crockett Record Book that Canada is grossly inferior to deer hunts in Iowa, deer hunts in Missouri, deer hunts in Pike County Illinois, deer hunts in Nebraska, and deer hunts in Kansas.

The Pope and Young Record Book indicates that a mere 545 whitetail deer have been entered into their system from Canada. Mexico has only generated 14 Pope and Young Entries. Oh yes its wonderful to dream about going to Canada to harvest a record book whitetail deer, however Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan combined have only generated 545 Pope and Young Entries. Meanwhile the Illinois deer hunts alone have generated 4094 Pope and Young Record Book Entries, Iowa deer hunts have generated 2405 Pope and Young Record Book Entries, Missouri deer hunts have generated 1195 Pope and Young Record Book Entries, Nebraska deer hunts have generated 560 Pope and Young Record Book Entries, and Kansas deer hunts have generated 1482 Pope and Young Record Book Entries.

Literally when the 8 whitetail deer hunting Provinces in Canada have produced 545 Pope and Young Record Book Buck Entries, the mere 5 states of Illinois deer hunts, Iowa deer hunts, Nebraska deer hunts, Missouri deer hunts, and Kansas deer hunts have produced 9,736 Pope and Young Entries.

Again, Midwestern whitetail deer hunting has produced 10 times the amount of entries than Canada in the Pope and Young Record Books.

Canada versus the Midwest Deer Hunting Boone and Crockett Statistics

Of the top 200 highest scoring whitetail deer recorded in the Boone and Crockett Record Books, all of Canada has produced only 24 of them or 12% of the top 200 biggest whitetail bucks of all time.

Meanwhile the Midwest deer hunts have produced 155 of the top 200 highest scoring whitetail deer recorded in the Boone and Crockett Record Books or 78% .

Midwest Whitetail Deer Hunts Density Comparison
When looking at the East Coast in the Adirondacks, whitetail deer biologists say there is only about 12 deer per square mile, bucks are few and far between. As a whitetail deer outfitter I have many whitetail deer hunters that book hunts with me from that region. I hear story after story about the low numbers of deer seen there. To tell you the truth I give applause to these whitetail hunters as if I lived in a region such as this I donít know if I would even enjoy whitetail deer hunting.
Canada reports they have around 10 whitetail deer per square mile. Thatís less than what my hunters complain about in the region of the Adirondacks. Canada has further reported their deer density has decreased by a whopping 51% due to mortality caused by predation and starvation. Recent aerial survey results and reports from the field all show that white-tailed deer populations have declined significantly across the forest and forest fringe. This decline can be associated to the most recent winters that have been much more severe in terms of temperature and snow depth.
Missouri deer hunts provide 36 whitetail deer per square mile.
Illinois deer hunts provide 40 whitetail deer per square mile.
Iowa deer hunts provide 37 whitetail deer per square mile.
Nebraska deer hunts provide 20 whitetail deer per square mile.
Kansas deer hunts provide 40 whitetail deer per square mile.
Thus one can assume with Midwest deer hunts, not only does the whitetail deer hunter increase their odds of seeing deer by 400%, but also now know that Midwest Whitetail Deer Hunts provide up to 10 times the amount of record book bucks over the key Provinces in Canada.
Thus as the aforementioned factual data provided above displays it is very apparent that Midwest deer hunting is far superior to even Canada. While we could break down all the States in with the United States in regard to their deer hunts any whitetail enthusiast knows that the biggest whitetail bucks can be found on Illinois deer hunts, Iowa deer hunts, Missouri deer hunts, Kansas deer hunts, and Nebraska deer hunts.
What States Located in the Midwest are Best for Whitetail Deer Hunting? (Choosing your location.)
It is not enough for todayís whitetail deer hunter to pinpoint what State in the Midwest to deer hunt from. As in all States that hold trophy whitetail bucks, there are some areas of any State that are below average while other areas are fantastic. Todayís whitetail hunter needs to pin point the exact area the State is producing its largest whitetail deer herds, and biggest bucks. For example just tonight on the phone I spoke to a hunter that booked a Iowa deer hunt. He was very unhappy to learn that Iowa deer hunting is literally re-writing the record books from extreme South Central Iowa. This particular hunter had booked a Iowa deer hunt in extreme Northern Iowa before researching where exactly he needed to be hunting within the State of Iowa. Itís not enough just to book a deer hunt in a Midwestern State. The whitetail deer hunter needs to narrow the State of his choosing down to the best area or county in that particular State.
Missouri Deer Hunts
Four years ago the Missouri Department of Natural Resources employed antler restrictions on whitetail deer in Missouri in Shelby, Macon, and Knox Counties. Even prior to this these counties in Missouri were simply superior to any other Missouri deer hunting areas. Now, four years later Missouri deer hunts are nothing short of phenomenal. I would personally forecast that Missouri Deer Hunting is and will be the next whitetail target of many whitetail deer hunters. Missouri deer hunting is just about as friendly as any State in the nation. Deertags in Missouri for Missouri deer hunting are obtained over the counter at any sporting good store or Wal-Mart. These tags are a mere $200 for nonresidents. Anyone born after January 1, 1967 needs to have completed a hunter education course if they plan on hunting with a firearm. Bow hunters for Missouri deer hunts not need have a hunter education course completed.
Unlike many other Midwest Whitetail Hunts this State opens its whitetail deer season for archery as early as September 15th. The Missouri archery season hunts end on January 15.
Missouri deer hunting allows the whitetail deer hunter to use a rifle, while some of the Midwest States mandate the whitetail hunter use a shotgun or muzzleloader. Missouri deer hunting also scheduled their rifle hunt for the peak of the rut which is normally the 2nd Saturday in November. So in Missouri deer hunting allows you to purchase a cheap tag over the counter, hunting with a rifle during the rut, as well as some of the finest archery hunting in the Midwest. I would argue that outside of Iowa, at the current time that Missouri deer hunting is 2nd to none. Itís a sleeper state that continues to get better and better.
Now that we have narrowed your Missouri whitetail deer hunt down to Shelby, Knox, or Macon County, its time to choose an Missouri Whitetail Deer Outfitter that is credible. Selecting a Missouri deer hunting outfitters may be the biggest trick of all. When IMB Outfitters first began to run deer hunts in Missouri I literally had to explain to the farmers what a whitetail deer outfitter was and how it could benefit them. In the State of Missouri you will find possibly the largest assortment of country boys running deer hunts in Missouri on cheap leases or the family farm out of bunkhouses with inferior food, treestands, and uneducated guides. Just this evening I had a hunter phone me about a Missouri deer hunt who was looking at 3 Missouri deer outfitters. I googled them for him to assist in determining the quality of my competition. One of the Missouri Whitetail Deer Outfitters we looked at that was providing Missouri deer hunts had not one photo in his trophy gallery. Of course this suggests this Missouri deer outfitter is in his first year of business and probably has much to learn about providing a quality Missouri deer hunt. The second Missouri deer outfitter I googled for this gentleman which he was considering was a tad more credible, however few photos were in the outfitters trophy gallery, and the lodge accommodations were nothing short of horrid. While the hunter seem to not mind staying in an old beat up pole barn with a bar b que grill, the lack of proper and sanitary lodge accommodations suggest that this Missouri deer outfitter doesnít have the funds to provide an appropriate lodge setting. This would lead me to believe this particular Missouri deer outfitter providing Missouri deer hunts also canít probably afford to lease the best land tracts, purchase the best treestands equipment, hire quality hunt guides, implement a quality food plot program along with a vast array of things that are vital to the whitetail hunters success.
The correct Missouri whitetail deer outfitter to book with is clearly IMB Outfitters. Why? IMB Outfitters is the right choice of outfitters for a Trophy Whitetail Hunt. A number of factual, verifiable facts exist to show IMB is indeed the ďBest Whitetail Outfitter in the MidwestĒ as their slogan claims.

1. IMB Outfitters has been in business for 13 years without interruption. The hunt industry is relatively a small arena. Any whitetail outfitter that has thrived throughout 13 years of business, through terrorist attacks, economy declines, natural disasters, and massive amounts of competition has to have positive attributes and solid foundational hunt strategies that have continued to succeed year after year. As a general rule you just canít last in an arena as small as the hunt industry without repeat success.

2. IMB Outfitters is sponsored by over 2 dozen major hunt companies in the industry. Household names like Mossy Oak, Mathews Bows, Nikon, Hunter Specialties, Goodyear Tires, Thompson Center Arms, Horton Crossbows, and many more as seen on our sponsors page. Why is this important. These Fortune 500 Companies do NOT attach their names with a whitetail outfitter that is shady, below average, or unethical.

3. IMB Outfitters possessís over 21,000 acres in Missouri for deer hunts and is the clear leader among all Missouri whitetail outfitters. Most of our landowners have been in business with us in excess of 10 years proving IMB treats their landowners well. In turn you can be expected to be treated well. Our lodges provide State of the Art services such as great meals 3 times a day, wireless internet, big screen plasma televisions, recreational centers, and old fashioned honest business tactics. We also have no trophy fees or hidden costs on our Missouri deer hunts.

4. IMB Outfitters was chosen by Petersonís Hunting as one of the top 44 Hunt Outfitters in the entire World. Not just whitetail outfitters but rather chosen out of the top 44 outfitters in the entire world. When Petersonís Hunting first evaluated IMB Outfitters they were attending a Missouri deer hunt.

5. IMB Outfitters made North American Whitetails Hall of Fame in 2008.

6. IMB Outfitters normally sports a 3 to 1 guide to hunter ratio on its Missouri deer hunts. This means 1 guide only places 3 hunters in the woods daily. At some hunt camps outfitters have guides place over 5 hunters in the woods daily thereby decreasing the quality of services offered to hunters on a personal basis. Believe me the last thing you want is to have one guide putting 5 or 6 hunters in at one time. Guide to hunter ratioís are very important.
7. IMB Outfitters has been fondly represented by the industries top sports writers, hunt television celebrities, outdoor television networks, pro staffers, and major hunt website for over a decade. IMB has hosted numerous Outdoor Writerís Conferences, Hunter Specialties Videos and Pro Staff, Roger Raglin, Tim Hooey, Brock Ray, many famous Sports Figures, etc. These folks donít waste time hunting with inferior whitetail outfitters. Most of the aforementioned rebooked several times. In fact IMB has hosted the Hunter Specialty video tours for the past several years.

8. IMB Outfitters ONLY selects the most qualitative farms to lease in Missouri for Missouri deer hunting. I canít count the number of times we have elected not to lease a farm because it wasnít up to our standards, only to watch another whitetail outfitter lease the farm days later and run hunts on it. When you hunt with IMB you will hunt land tracts that have undergone the up most scrutinized qualitative measurements prior to leasing. It is my belief IMB has the best farms in the Midwest, exclusively leased through private land tracts, never under high fence, and never on public ground.

9. IMB Guides are trained thoroughly via a program devised in house on how to pattern big deer, identify topographical advantages, host clients in a courteous manner, and carefully selects only the best applications and resumes sent in by potential employees. After which a rigorous interviewing process is employed to assure no novice guides are hosting hunters..

10. IMB has no trophy fees. No matter how large a buck you harvest no additional fees are attached. (We do however employ a $400 penalty for shooting a buck under 120 inches to ensure we are growing larger and larger deer annually.)

11. IMB land tracts have been under quality deer management programs for over a decade. Also new farms are added annually.

12. IMB pays landowners 40% of the gross hunt monies to ensure landowners receive some of the best lease rewards available. This program leads to landing the best farms in the Midwest.

13. IMB employs full time guide positions in an effort to continually maintain quality stand sites as well as the employment of intense scouting year round for the benefit of our hunters selecting Missouri deer hunts.

14. After a random selection of whitetail outfitters in 2008 IMB was determined to be in the lower 30 percentile regarding hunt costs. At IMB you will get the most bang for your buck so to speak. Typically hunts range from $2000 to $3500.

15. IMB offers both semi and fully guided Missouri deer hunts.

16. IMB employs a tremendous food plot program for its Missouri deer hunts keeping animals on our land tracts even in the toughest of hunt conditions.

17. IMB presents some of the highest quality lodges and food in the hunt industry.

18. IMB employs a three step strategy for all hunters to pattern trophy bucks. When you arrive in camp you are provided with an aerial book which shows photos of all the farms in the state you are hunting with stand locations marked and numbered so you can see where you are going to hunt each day. IMB also presents a ledger book where on each outing for over a decade we record what hunter sat in what stand and what he saw. That way when you get to camp you can literally see the history of the stand you are hunting and verify it hasnít been over hunted as the ledger book tells how many times a stand has been hunted and how successful it has been. The third step is the implementation of a record keeping system by which we record conditions surrounding each hunters hunt every morning and evening to determine where bucks are moving and why. This is a way to pattern deer. Most outfitters simply take your money and start throwing you in stands simply hoping for the best without much strategy. Most whitetail outfitters never show stand histories because they are ashamed of how often stands get hunted. Here at IMB a tree stand gets hunted 4 times a year on average. Four times means one morning, one evening, one morning, one evening. Now thatís quality. This in fact was the sole discussion on the Outdoor Channel between Roger Raglin, Hunt Celebrity and IMB Owner, Darrin Bradley in 2006. Raglin simply couldnít believe how few times a stand was actually hunted over the course of a season.

19. IMB prides themselves on providing a vast array of ambush or tree stand sites hung correctly for its Missouri deer hunts. IMB sports over 1000 stand setups. 80% of these are fixed position treestands accessed by tree sticks. You simply climb up a fixed ladder stick on a tree that correctly placed so that the hunter can step down into the treestand. Many whitetail outfitters hang treestands clumsily making them hard to access. IMB also has quality ladder stands set against treestands for hunters that prefer these types of setups. For the physically challenged hunter IMB also has a number of box blinds, and pop up blinds. Virtually IMB can accommodate just about anyone.

Always remember when your booking a hunt your buying something you cannot see from somebody who sells them everyday. Donít cut corners with public hunting ground, swap hunts, or unimpressive outfits just to save a few bucks because they are located in State that sports giant whitetail bucks. Make a solid choice with an outfitter that sports a great website, great brochure, an outfitter that calls you and talks to you about your hunt at length.

Iowa Deer Hunts
Iowa deer hunting is the best trophy whitetail buck hunting I have simply ever seen. Iowa deer hunts arenít quite as friendly to non residents. Archers wishing to hunt deer in Iowa usually have to wait 2 to 3 years to get a archery tag through a series of preference points accumulated. Normally itís a 2 year process but well worth the wait.
Iowa deer hunts are more accessible by means of firearm hunting, as 84% of our Iowa deer hunters drew tags in 2009. Firearms tags in Iowa are fairly easy to get but not guaranteed. When deer hunting in Iowa on an Iowa deer hunt the hunter needs to know that if firearms hunting he or she is restricted to using a shotgun or muzzleloader. Rifles are restricted.
Iowa deer hunts begin for the archer on October 1, and end on January 15. Iowa deer hunts with firearms normally fall in or about December 3rd separated into two 5 day seasons with a 3 day break in between the Iowa deer hunts for firearm season. After which Iowa deer hunting offers a muzzleloader season in or about December 20 through Jan 10 or so. Iowa deer hunt tags for muzzleloader hunts are very easy to obtain but not guaranteed.
Again when you select your Iowa deer hunt you simply need to stay in Zone 5. Accept nothing short of this Zone 5 for your Iowa deer hunt no matter what the Iowa Whitetail Deer Outfitter may tell you on the phone. This area is located in extreme South Central Iowa near the Missouri State Line.
Unfortunately Iowa is also a place where the vast majority of Iowa deer outfitters are mostly landownerís sons who simply want to be in the hunt industry. You must hunt Zone 5 on your Iowa deer hunt to maximize your success rates of harvesting the record book deer of a lifetime. Now make sure you select the most credible Iowa whitetail deer outfitter available in Zone 5. The choice is clear. IMB Outfitters. Why us? Once again.
1. IMB Outfitters has been in business for 13 years without interruption. The hunt industry is relatively a small arena. Pike County Illinois Deer Hunts
Pike County Illinois may be the most highly recognized County in the Nation regarding the harvest of trophy whitetail deer. There are over 400 Illinois whitetail deer outfitters. Many of which are not located in Pike County, Illinois. These Illinois deer outfitters not located in Pike County, Illinois will tell you that their whitetail deer hunting is just as good or better than Pike County, Illinois however this is not true. We began our business 13 years ago in Illinois. It just seems like once you get outside the County of Pike the deer herd and number of trophy bucks rapidly declines. It seems just about everyone that has access to Illinois farms is trying to make a quick dollar of the mere name of the State. Donít be fooled. If your gonna hunt Illinois for deer you need to select a credible Pike County Illinois Whitetail Deer Outfitter.
Illinois deer hunting offers Pike County Illinois deer hunts for archers beginning on October 1 and ending on January 15. All tags are easily obtained. Illinois deer hunting archery tags are available by phone in early June, while Illinois deer hunting with firearms is restricted to shotguns or muzzleloaders only with tags available online via a lenient lottery system beginning in early July.
Fact: No other County in the Nation has more record book entries than Pike County, Illinois.
One needs to be very careful when booking a Pike County, Illinois deer hunt with a Illinois whitetail outfitter. The Pike County, Illinois Outfitters may be the most evolved whitetail outfitters of all States. Many poor choices can be made when venturing to Pike County, Illinois in search of a Pike County Illinois deer hunt. This region not only has your typical low quality service around every corner but also presents many slick whitetail outfitters that know exactly how to lead you on the phone with exaggerated promises. In fact as a result the Illinois Department of Natural Resources was forced to employ rules and strict regulations along with laws in an attempt to govern what can and cannot be said to a client seeking a Pike County, Illinois deer hunt.
While I havenít always been able to say this, after 13 years of being a Pike County, Illinois whitetail outfitter, I honestly believe we are the most solid selection among all Pike County, Illinois Outfitters. Why?

This in fact was the sole discussion on the Outdoor Channel between Roger Raglin, Hunt Celebrity and IMB Owner, Darrin Bradley in 2006. Raglin simply couldnít believe how few times a stand was actually hunted over the course of a season.

19. IMB prides themselves on providing a vast array of ambush or tree stand sites hung correctly for its Pike County, Illinois deer hunts.

Nebraska Deer Hunts
Not all areas in Nebraska are producing trophy deer. That is why so few entries are in the record books. In fact Nebraska may have the fewest entries of any Midwestern State, however there is another side to the Nebraska deer hunt coin. Non residents were not legally able to hunt with firearms until 2006, thus the pursuit of whitetail deer hunts in Nebraska by non residents were limited thereby causing a decrease in record book entries. If you are going to hunt deer in Nebraska on your next Midwestern Whitetail Hunt this one of the few locations that cannot be judged by its record book entries.
When deer hunting in Nebraska you simply need to stay in the extreme South Central portion of the State bordering the Kansas State Line. It is here your Nebraska deer hunt will produce huge rewards. Literally I am amazed as a whitetail deer hunter just what we have discovered in those spooky Republican River Bottoms of Nebraska for deer hunting. Its definite Boone and Crockett territory.
Nebraska has many fine outfitters but most of them concentrate on muledeer, pronghorn, and whitetails in Nebraskaís western region which is the weakest for trophy whitetail deer hunts in Nebraska. In fact I donít even know of another Nebraska deer outfitter that solely concentrates on trophy whitetail deer in this prime region. Nebraska is the home of the giant whitetail deer. Trust me a Nebraska deer hunt with IMB Outfitters can be mind boggling. Again I ask you, ďWhy IMB Outfitters for you Nebraska deer hunt?Ē

3. IMB Outfitters possessís over 14,000 acres in Nebraska deer hunts and is the clear leader among all Nebraska whitetail outfitters. We also have no trophy fees or hidden costs on our Nebraska deer hunts.
4. IMB Outfitters was chosen by Petersonís Hunting as one of the top 44 Hunt Outfitters in the entire World. Not just whitetail outfitters but rather chosen out of the top 44 outfitters in the entire world. When Petersonís Hunting first evaluated IMB Outfitters they were attending a Nebraska deer hunt.

5. IMB Outfitters made North American Whitetails Hall of Fame in 2008.

6. IMB Outfitters normally sports a 3 to 1 guide to hunter ratio on its Nebraska deer hunts.

8. IMB Outfitters ONLY selects the most qualitative farms to lease in Nebraska for Nebraska deer hunting.

13. IMB employs full time guide positions in an effort to continually maintain quality stand sites as well as the employment of intense scouting year round for the benefit of our hunters selecting Nebraska deer hunts.

14. After a random selection of whitetail outfitters in 2008 IMB was determined to be in the lower 30 percentile regarding hunt costs. At IMB you will get the most bang for your buck so to speak. Typically hunts range from $2000 to $3500.

15. IMB offers both semi and fully guided Nebraska deer hunts.

16. IMB employs a tremendous food plot program for its Nebraska deer hunts keeping animals on our land tracts even in the toughest of hunt conditions.

Kansas Deer Hunts
Iíve always been honest so let me tell you that why we run great turkey hunts in Kansas I have yet to discover the quality or quantity of whitetail deer in Kansas that we have in the other States we outfit. We are currently working on a project that may redefine our Division of Kansas deer hunting for 2010. I know the big deer are there but so far I have tried to discourage Kansas deer hunts until the problem is solved.
We are currently looking to head to South East Kansas around Butler County, Kansas to enhance our Kansas division. When this happens we will apprise our client base of the status of these Kansas deer hunts, however until then I cannot honestly promote the State as all our others unless your in pursuit of turkeys.
